There are nine gifts of the Spirit and it is the Holy Spirit who distributes all these gifts to believers who earnestly seek them. They are: the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, gift of healing, the working of miracles, prophecy, the discernment of spirits, the ability to speak in unknown languages, and the interpretation of the unknown languages.
"A spiritual gift if given to each of us
so we can help each other.
To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice;
to another the same Spirit gives
a message of special knowledge.
a message of special knowledge.
The same Spirit gives great faith to another,
and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing.
He gives one person the power to perform miracles,
and another the ability to prophesy.
He gives someone else the ability to discern
whether a message is from the Spirit of God
or from another spirit.
or from another spirit.
Still another person is given the ability
to speak in unknown languages,
to speak in unknown languages,
while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.
It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts.
He alone decides which gift each person should have.
1 Corinthians 12:7-11 (NLT)
The main purpose of these spiritual gifts is to help each other. However, today we do not commonly see these spiritual gifts practiced. Why? Because we lack the most important thing and the basis for all these gifts: love for one another. Unless we truly love one another, these spiritual gifts will sound repulsive, do nothing for us, or be of any benefit to anyone else.
If we want to see more of the spiritual gifts practiced in our churches today, we need to seek first a more excellent way.
And I show you a still more excellent way."
1 Corinthians 12:31b (NLT)
