Like A Gold Ring In A Pig's Snout

Farmers install rings into the snouts of their pigs to stop them from rooting. Rooting is when a pig uses its snout to burrow into the ground, which can cause considerable damage to the farmer's crops.

In the Bible, God likens a beautiful woman who lacks discretion to a gold ring in a pig's snout. A woman who lacks discretion is void of virtue and honour. In other words, she does not exhibit the beautiful characters of God inside her, even though she may be beautiful on the outside. Her apparel, conduct, and speech are immoral. She is proud, selfish, bad-tempered, untrustworthy, sexually immoral, and manipulative. She may be attractive on the outside, like a shiny, shimmering gold ring, but she is repulsive on the inside, like an ugly, mean-spirited, and filthy pig whose behaviour causes destruction.

Like the old saying goes, "It's not what's on the outside that counts, but what's on the inside." The true beauty of a woman shines forth from the goodness in her heart, and radiates kindness on her face and gentleness in her eyes.

As one continues to read further in the book of Proverbs it also states that a wife of noble character is worth far more than rubies.

"A wife of noble character who can find?

She is worth far more than rubies."

Proverbs 31:10 (NIV)

How true that is! It is sad that the world puts great emphasis on outer beauty and very little emphasis on inner beauty. Many of the movie stars are beautiful on the outside, but miserable on the inside. They once thought that their beauty, sexual appeal, fame, and money would bring them the happiness they desired, but they found out it only brought them disappointments, hurts, and insecurities. And as their beauty and fame fades, they turn to drugs and alcohol to numb their pain and misery. It breaks my heart every time when I hear on the news of famous actors, actresses, singers, and musicians who die prematurely because of drug and alcohol addictions, prescription drugs abuse, or suicide. If only they sought and took heed to the infinite wisdom of God in His Word.
