Near, But Far

When I went for a walk a few nights ago, I came across three Brewer's Blackbirds feeding on insects in a grassy field.

From afar these birds looked like they were all black, but when I zoomed in with my camera to take a closer look, I saw that the birds had midnight blue heads and metallic green bodies. Their legs and bills were the only parts of them that were black and yet they are called Blackbirds.

People can be like that too. From afar they can look like Christians, but when you examine them more closely, you sadly realize they are not. The Bible says that people can come near to God with their mouths and honour Him with their lips, but have their hearts far from Him. Such people's worship of God is based merely on human rules they have been taught and not on true love and devotion for Him.

"The Lord says:
'These people come near to Me
with their mouth
and honour Me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from Me.
Their worship of Me is based
on merely human rules
they have been taught.'"
Isaiah 29:13 (NIV)
