Watch Therefore

Recently, Tim, Matthew, and I have been working on installing the ceiling in the half-basement of our house. It is the final step to finishing downstairs. Yes!

A few nights ago, however, Matthew was caught sleeping on the job. Tim asked for Matthew's help to hold a metal L in place while he nailed it in postion, but when he turned around, Matthew was asleep on the bed with his legs dangling to the floor. Tim quietly came upstairs, grabbed Chris' camera, and snapped a picture. I couldn't help but post it.

Matthew falling asleep on the job reminds me of the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Ten women, who are used to represent God's people, are sleeping when they are supposed to be ready and waiting for Christ's final return to earth. The parable ends with this verse:

"Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming."
Matthew 25:13

A sleeping Christian is one who isn't abiding in the Lord Jesus Christ. They may attend Church regularly and call themselves Christians, but they love the world or themselves more than they love God. They are not communing with God in a real way. Their hearts are far from Him and have turned towards other things — things that have become more important than God. They have stopped watching for His return and consequently have missed being taken up with Jesus to His glorious Kingdom.

"Therefore keep watch
because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back —
whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.
If He comes suddenly,
do not let Him find you sleeping.
What I say to you, I say to everyone:
'Watch!'"
Mark 13:35-37

Keep watching and be ready! Never stop loving God! Don't ever forget that one day Jesus will return as promised, for this day is near.
